Years back we had the same lighting problem and came up with a very low-tech solution--suspended a small, pretty lamp from a nail in the wall above the kitchen counter. Better Homes and Gardens was not going to show up for a photo shoot anytime soon, but at least we could see better.

I dont know what your kitchen looks like or this area your talking about but I have seen some woman put lamps on their counter tops. Maybe that would help in the meantime? If theres room I mean.
