F is for Fleetwood

Print

I'm really getting into this 'F' thing.....and couldn't believe my crafty eyes when I saw online that Joann's had a monstrous papier-mâché 'F' available!  This letter is a whopping 23-1/2" tall!!!  None of the Joann's in my neck of the woods carried these letters in-store.....so I headed over to their website.....with my 40% off coupon + shipping = got it for a steal!!!  So now that I had this mega 'F' in my hot little hands.....it was time to put the ol' thinking cap on, and decide what to do with it.  It was such a DUH moment.....why am I making all these F's?  For our last name.....Fleetwood!  So why not cover the 'F' in lots of Fleetwoods.....and Fleetwoods it was.....

You'll Need
  • Large papier-mâché letter
  • Photocopies of your name (MUST be copies - to prevent ink from running)
  • Collage Pauge Instant Decoupage - matte
  • Distress Ink - antique linen
  • Acrylic paint - beige
  • Mod Podge - gloss
  • Foam brushes
  • E6000 glue
  • Picture hangers
Ignore the Triple Thick Glaze in this photo.....I opted against it in the end.

Type your last name in different fonts and in various sizes, and print them off.  You'll need to take these sheets to your copy center and make photocopies (otherwise the ink from your printer will run when decoupaged).

I tore the paper from around each name to give it more of a casual look.  If you pull the paper toward you, the result will be more of a raggedy tear.

Paint all sides of the letter with acrylic paint.  Set aside to dry completely.

Brush some of the Collage Pauge onto the letter where you'll be putting the strip of paper, and also onto the back of the piece of paper with your name on it (don't worry if you get some on the front of the paper, it'll give a neat effect later on).  Apply the name onto the letter.  Continue doing this until the letter is completely covered.  You may have to tear the name into smaller portions to fill in empty areas.....but it's alright if you have some smaller spaces here and there.  This isn't rocket science!

Once the letter is completely covered, set it aside to dry for about 30 minutes.

Distress the letter in workable sections with some of the Distress Ink by rubbing and dabbing, then take a paper towel to blend it in a bit.  Once done with one section, move on to the next, and continue till the letter is completely distressed.

Let the Distress Ink dry for about 15 minutes.

Cover the top and sides with Mod Podge, and let dry.  Once the top is dry, turn it over and do the same on the backside.  Make sure you blend in any dribbles.

With some E6000 glue, apply the picture hangers onto the back of the letter, making sure that they are spaced so the letter will be balanced when hung (depending on your letter, you may need either 1 or 2 hangers).  Let the glue dry completely.

Now go find a spot and hang your new letter!!!

Great project! The distress ink is new to me, and I'm dying to get some now. This year's been so busy that blogging and crafting have come to a grinding halt (well, almost). 70. This is a great idea, I just bought one of these letters from Joanns and I painted it my fave shade of purple but wasn't sure what to do after that. Thanks so much for finishing my idea for me! and a suggestion that I read somewhere else. When you print things off your computer to keep the ink from running when you decoupage, give them a quick coat of clear spray paint. Let it dry and you are ready to decoupage! She did this with photos she printed and it turned out great.
