I'm Not Afraid...Anymore

Goodwill.....

When I think of Goodwill.....it's a place for me to donate whatever someone else needs more than us.  It's never been a place for me to shop.....ever!  That is until now.  So many of the blogs I follow are from craftland.....where repurposing is almost a challenge.....and repurposing comes in the form of things found around the house.....the curb.....dumpsters (yes, there are even a few dumpster divers out there).....and Goodwill.  I myself have snagged things from the curb a time or two.....even knocked on a door asking if something was up for grabs (it was).....but never stepped foot into a Goodwill until a week ago.  I nearly flipped over some of the stuff that they were practically giving away.  Whenever I came across one of those goodies.....I snatched it to my chest and said, "mine."  A few things I hemmed and hawed over.....but for the price, I just couldn't pass.

Lately I've been wanting some ceramic plates of the French Provençal style for a skinny wall that was screaming for some color.  I had a vision in my mind.....started Googling and checking out websites.....but all I came up with was $$$$.....in my wallet that means "no way, José."  Then there was my first trip to Goodwill.....and within moments of my arrival, there they were.....well, not the ceramic plates.....but a close second.....and one that will do until I get sick of them, and move onto something else (I'm the whirling dervish of decorating).  Here's the three metal plates I found.....ALL for $1.99.....

Check out where they were originally from.....that's a SCORE.....

I just E6000'd a hanger onto the back of each.....let it dry.....then Voilà.....

This bowl is my absolute favorite find.....$3.99!!!  YES!!!  Not one nick or crack anywhere!  It also goes perfectly with the theme of my kitchen (whatever that would be).....

I came across this glass bowl.....this VERY HEAVY glass bowl.....

This cheese dome was my #2 score.....though at $3.99, I probably paid more than it was worth (everyone I've read who's snagged these says never to pay more than $1.99.....oh well, live and learn).  It's future is uncertain.....thinking about painting the base.....or use a completely different base than it came with.....most definitely will glue a candlestick underneath it and give it a whole new look.  Confusing yes, but this is all a master plan in the works in my head.....

These guys are what I'm getting at about the 'candlestick on the bottom' comment.  May be I'll leave them as is.....doubt it.....will probably repaint them as they're butt ugly.....well, may be not the orangey-brown one.....we'll see.....

I snatched up these plates.....probably will be part of another one of those serving plates that will be on a candlestick.  They're actually all different designs.....but the one on top may possibly be matched up with the candlestick up above.....who knows.....

My "new" way of thinking about Goodwill.....most everything there came from people like you and me.....everything is clean......and everything is CHEAP!  Not every Goodwill is alike.....the first one I went to had the friendliest salespeople who actually seemed to love their job.....but the place stank of high heaven.  The second one was pleasant.....nothing earth-shattering.....but I scored well there!  There's a third one opening up very soon that I can't wait to check out.....who'd have thunk yours truly would be excited about the grand opening of a Goodwill!

I promise to share my repurposing of these finds in the coming weeks.  The glass serving bowl is going to stay "as is".....because you can never have too many serving bowls!

  3. I have to laugh. I was you about a year ago with never shopping at Goodwill. But as you learned, once you go and find a few unbelievable deals like you did here....you get hooked!!! It's not so bad once you get past the smell! I hate that smell...it smells like a cross between the dry cleaners and somebody's basement! Otherwise...what's not to like!!
