Ceiling Medallion Mirror

Print

Recently we removed the chandelier in our dining room, and with that, down came the ceiling medallion that dressed it up a bit.  Not wanting to just chunk it, I decided that I could repurpose it into a frame for a mirror.  You can certainly head out to any big box hardware store or lighting shop, and find ceiling medallions galore in any size or style, but if you've got one lying around, this makes for a super repurposing project that's easy on the wallet!

Ceiling Medallion Mirror

You'll Need

Ceiling Medallion
Paint (if not pre-painted)
Sponge brush (to get in all the nooks and crannies)
Sea Sponge (small piece)
Mirror (size appropriate for opening in medallion)
E6000 Glue
Hanger

If your ceiling medallion is not painted, then you'll want to give it some color to complement your decor.  The one that I used for this project I had previously painted a deep burgundy, then once completely dry, I sponged gold here and there to give it an aged look.  Make sure the medallion is completely dry before proceeding on with the rest of the project.

If you are using a repurposed medallion, make sure to remove any of the old glue from the backside of the medallion so it won't stick to your wall and make a mess of it.

The size of your mirror is dependent on the size of the opening of your medallion.  Just make sure that the mirror has enough of an overlap to be able to glue it to the medallion.

Mirrors can be bought quite inexpensively at any big box craft store.

Eyeball centering the mirror on the backside of the medallion, then mark around the mirror.

Apply a line of glue midway between the line you drew and the edge of the opening.

Carefully apply the mirror (mirror side down) on the medallion, making sure to align the mirror with the circle you drew.  Or be like me, and have it slightly cattywompus!

Decide where you want the hanger to be positioned, then add a splooch of glue, and place the hanger into the glue making sure that it's firmly set.  Make sure you don't get glue onto a movable part of your hanger...or it'll never move again!

The hangers can be found in the framing department of your big box craft store.

At this point, just set it aside overnight until the glue has completely set.

Now you're ready to display your newly repurposed medallion/mirror!
